Roopraj Dhurry Udyog

Roopraj Dhurry Udyog Review

Local artisan Roopraj learned the art of weaving dhurries (carpets) from his father, who learned it from his father—the tradition goes back to the early 19th century. His cotton carpets were originally reserved for the village thakur, or landowner, but once Indira Gandhi enacted the Integrated Rural Development Project (IRDP), his carpets were finally able to reach a wider market. The Roopraj Dhurry Udyog co-op cottage industry employs weavers from the village and keeps the tradition alive. It's as rewarding to watch the weaving process as it is to come with a purchase in mind, or just to shop for souvenirs. Salawas is near the railway crossing on the way to the town of Kakani; you'll definitely need a guide to help you get here.
