A two-hour drive from Jodhpur takes you to rural Khimsar in the Thar Desert. At this graceful palace and fort, the best rooms are in the original structure; some with furniture from the 1920s. Dinner is served by candlelight in the crumbling ruins of one of the original fort towers. Relax and enjoy the fine service, as well as the peace and quiet. If you feel like exploring, you can take a horse, camel, or jeep safari or tea on the nearby sand dunes. For the complete desert experience, stay in luxury tents in Khimsar village 7 km (4½ mi) from the fort. Pros: retreat from city life and take day trips to Jodhpur and Bikaner. Cons: self-contained oasis offers a lot, but it's in the middle of nowhere.
