A fine example of Rajput architecture, this red sandstone Heritage Hotel is surrounded by lush, expansive green gardens on the outskirts of Jodhpur. On the banks of Balsamand Lake, an artificial lake built in the 12th century, the palace has long been a dreamy setting for royal R & R. The park around the lake contains a small bird sanctuary; just watch out for aggressive monkeys. Meals are prepared for guests only. Pros: palace living at a reasonable price, quiet retreat on the outskirts of Jodhpur, ideal for nature lovers. Cons: a bit remote and out of the way, "deluxe" rooms are ordinary, no Internet.
