The only decent place to stay in Nawalgarh combines Rajput and European architecture in its beautiful gardens and private cottages. It's far from grand, but the owners, descendants of the former thakur (landowner), aim to please. The circular driveway upon entering the gates is impressive and the surrounding gardens are an oasis full of chirping birds and cool breezes. The rooms, with Victorian furniture, are modest but clean. The dining room is quaint. The restaurant contains an eclectic assortment of antiques of both Rajput and British origin, and some firearms, including six-shooters and a blunderbuss. It serves vegetarian and nonvegetarian cuisine and has a bar license. Pros: very affordable, ideal base to explore Nawalgarh's hundreds and havelis and the surrounding area. Cons: hotel is in one corner of town, so you'll need a car to get around.
