Gujarat's Hotels and Restaurants

Gujarat's Hotels and Restaurants

Ahmedabad and some other cities have some good business hotels, and in the countryside some formerly state-run tourist facilities have been refurbished under private ownership. Several of the modest palaces of former princes have been converted to Heritage Hotels in charming rural locations. Prices are generally fairly reasonable at most hotels in Gujarat and service more than adequate. But Gujarat does believe in checking in its hotel guests bright and early, and as a result you may have to check out as early as 9 am.

Note that Gujarat is a dry state in more ways than one. Its citizens are not allowed to consume alcohol. Alcohol is available only in a few hotel shops and hotel restaurants. Ask your hotel how to obtain a permit from the Excise Department to purchase from these stores.

North Indian and Punjabi food is widely available, and is the standard fare at most hotels and restaurants. Many dishes tend to be vegetarian here, and the local dish is the over-the-top Gujarati take on the pan-Indian thali, or combination platter. In Muslim areas of Ahmedabad and elsewhere in the state you will find excellent kebabs, biryanis (rice cooked with meat), and boti rolls (rotis stuffed with meat and rolled up).
