Transportation within Orissa
Hiring a car and driver for a half or full day is not expensive, and is the most convenient way to get around Orissa in general and the towns in particular—you avoid having to haggle over fares with taxi or auto-rickshaw drivers, as well as the overcrowded conditions of the local buses. Auto-rickshaws are cheaper than taxis and usually slower (though quicker in heavy traffic). Apply the same fare rules as you would for taxis. For short distances within towns, cycle-rickshaws are easiest. A horde of cycle-rickshaws await you at the train stations. Always negotiate the fare with any taxi, auto-rickshaw, or cycle-rickshaw driver before you set off in order to avoid hassles or overcharging later. The OTDC arranges transport inexpensively to the main tourist spots. In a leisurely town like Puri, hire a bicycle or a motorbike for Rs. 150 per day at any of the shops on Chakratirtha Road.
