You don't come to Orissa for the hotels. As a rule, they're utilitarian, and service is far from snappy, with a few newer exceptions. Outside Bhubaneswar, a hot shower is a luxury; often, hot water is delivered in a bucket. Rates, however, are significantly lower than in more heavily traveled parts of India, and discounts are readily available outside high season (approximately December and January). The pricier hotels offer air-conditioning, currency exchange, and bathrooms with tubs. Some defensive-traveling tips: when you check into a hotel (other than a Trident or a Mayfair) in winter, ask that an extra blanket be sent to your room immediately, just in case; when you get to your room, check the hot water (if you have it)—sometimes it has to be turned on, and it's better to know sooner rather than when you're ready for your shower. Unless otherwise noted, hotels in this chapter have air-conditioning and private baths.
