Orissa prides itself on being a rich realm of culture and the state has, indeed, a very sumptuous artistic legacy. Religion, dance, and art dominate its languid way of life, especially in the villages, where 87 percent of the population resides. The unique tribal culture of the Adivasis (the indigenous people), who live largely in the hilly northwest tracts of the state, is also a vital and colourful addition to Orissa's traditions.
