Fairly good roads connect Mumbai to most major cities and tourist areas. Hiring a car and driver gives you a chance to watch the often beautiful surroundings whiz by, but it can also be loud, hair-raising, and less than time-efficient. Drivers honk at anything, including birds, and many two-way "highways" are really one-lane roads with a little extra space for an oncoming car to swerve around you, and are flanked by steep ridges so the water can drain off the road during monsoon. So if you have the time and the nerves for a road trip, you'll experience what many people miss when they fly.
