The basement of 18 Dr. Ambedkar Road is the address of Pune's first—and probably only—proper seafood restaurant. A branch of the Mumbai landmark for seafoodies, Pune Mahesh offers pretty much the real thing, and that makes it some of the best seafood in the city. Tuck into their prawn gassis, lady fish fry, tandoori pomfret, or crab sukka (dry)—catch here is fresh and gussied up with traditional Manglorean coast masalas (spice mixes) composed of coconut, red chillies, kokum (a sour berry), and other condiments. The restaurant has a soothing, non-surprising Indian-restaurant vibe: green sofas, granite floors, etched glass, and Hindi film music playing in the background.
