Mumbai's Mahalaxmi Race Course (Near Nehru Planetarium, Mahalaxmi. 22/2307-1401) is one of the finest courses in Asia. A visit here in season is a social experience—for a few months each year, this green patch in central Mumbai becomes an echo of London's Ascot racecourse in the 1950s, with posh accents, outfits that kill, and plenty of pomp and showiness. The season usually runs from November through April, with races on Thursday and Sunday. Right next door at the Amateur Riding Club you can rent horses for rides. Call 22/6600-5204 or 22/6600-5205 one day in advance. Half-hour riding sessions (Rs. 500) are from 6:15 to 7 am and from 5 to 6:30 pm.
