Fairlawn

Fairlawn Review

If you want a taste of life in the Raj, stay in this Kolkata landmark that dates from 1801. A small hotel, the Fairlawn has memorabilia-cluttered walls, a winding staircase, and a great overall vibe. Waiters wear gloves, a gong sounds during mealtimes, and rooms have chintz bedspreads and old-fashioned bathtubs. Pros: wonderful old-world atmosphere. Cons: neighborhood is a little seedy.

This place seems to be run like a private club by the management and if you aren't "in" with them you may arrive, as we did, with a reservation that they've "lost".

At first they were very sorry, they had nothing. Then, when we didn't go away, they found one, noisy, door opening right off the dining room with kitchen noise out the window. We took it for a night as it was late and moved on in the morning. The desk clerk was clearly embarrassed and I suspect our treatment is not unusual. Go for a drink but spare yourself the possible poor treatment and stay elsewhere.
