Bengalis love to eat, and much of their street food is unique. Common dishes include champ (chicken or mutton cooked slowly in large, thick-cast open pans), birianis (rice-and-meat dishes), and tandoori items, none of which resembles dishes of the same name in other parts of India. From roadside vendors, the most popular item is the Calcutta roll, in which seasoned meats or vegetables and chutneys are wrapped in thick parathas (Indian breads) with onions and sometimes even eggs. Not to be missed either are Bengali sweet shops, whose products fill the life of every native.
