Stress-free Westerners in green robes roam the winding pathways of this popular ayurvedic beach resort that's 2 km (1 mile) south of Kovalam, on 15 lush acres down by the sea. Lodging is in traditional wooden houses or simple brick cottages, some of them without air-conditioning, that are furnished with simple wood furniture and with white drapes and netting over the bed, The grounds are a bit crowded with both people and cottages, but the setting is still pleasant, and
there's a nice green-tiled pool. In 2006, the brothers who owned Somatheeram divided the resort into two, with one brother taking over the similar Somatheeram Beach Resort next door. The resorts share a restaurant. Guests here are focused on yoga and absorbing ayurvedic treatments, so it has a more virtuous, slightly goody-two-shoes feel. Nonvegetarian food is limited and needs to be requested; alcohol is frowned upon, and don't even dream of wearing swimwear and roaming the resort.
