Bekal Fort
Bekal Fort Review
The drive north from Kannur to Bekal, in the Kasargode district, is a dreamy trip through sleepy towns with nothing but coconut and rice fields in between. The largest fort in Kerala, Bekal Fort, covers more than over 40 seafront acres. The 300-year-old structure rises from a green lawn, and looks out over the Arabian Sea or distant coconut groves. You can easily spend a peaceful hour or two clambering around the ruins. The loudest noise you'll hear is the crashing of the waves against the ramparts. A massive resort development project is planned in the area, however, with grandiose plans to one day turn Bekal into a top Asian tourist destination.
