Gundert Memorial Church

Gundert Memorial Church Review

In 1839 Herman Gundert, a Protestant missionary from the Swiss Basel Mission, arrived in the town of Thalassery, south of Kannur. A prodigious scholar, Gundert published some 50 books on Malabar in the 20 years he lived here, including the first English-Malayalam dictionary. His bungalow is now part of a college campus. The small Gundert Memorial Church next to the campus is a pretty blend of Kerala and European architecture. The walls beside the altar are decorated with paintings of medicinal herbs—one of Gundert's many interests. The church is only open during services.
