Bangalore has an impressive restaurant scene, but options for dining out in the rest of Karnataka are less varied, with tasty food but limited menus. You'll almost always find delicious, vegetarian southern favorites like various kinds of dosas (filled, crepelike pancakes), and idlis (steamed rice cakes), both served with coconut chutney and other condiments. A popular rice dish is bisi belebath, spicy lentil curry and mixed vegetables topped with wafers. Karnataka is truly famed for its thali, a combination platter done South Indian style—with rice surrounded by several bowls of vegetables and sauces. The thali is cheap, filling, and good. Also, unlike most parts of India, Karnataka brews a fine cup of coffee.
