The large state of Karnataka lies in India's southwest quadrant. Roughly the size of New England, it has a west coast that runs from just below Goa to south of Mangalore, and its interior is even longer, making it a kind of transitional state between India's lower center and its extremely southern states. Because its northern sections are difficult and time-consuming to reach, most travelers concentrate their journey in southern Karnataka, starting out from the main hub of Bangalore.
