Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh Restaurant Reviews

Fast-food restaurants and coffeehouses in Shimla abound on the Mall—Devicos, Indian Coffee House, and Barista among them. They're good for quick fixes, but ambience is not a priority; for that you're better off driving to one of the fancier hotels for an authentic and delightful Himachali meal.

In summer, Manali attracts restaurant owners from all over, who set up shop for the season, and you have a chance of sampling good versions of Italian food or cheese fondues or, better still, fresh trout. Dharamshala also caters to international tourists with food that includes Indian favorites, Israeli cuisine, first-class Tibetan and Chinese food, and also pastas and excellent pastries. In smaller Himachal towns it's better to stick with regular Indian fare.

Almost all of Leh's restaurants are small and informal. Try the standards: momos and a noodle soup called thukpa. You may also have a chance to try chang (a local brew made from fermented barley) or, more likely, some gur-gur cha, yak-butter tea mixed with milk and salt. Competent Indian food is also available.
