Backpackers and other travelers who appreciate a sense of place love the home-away-from-home warmth of the Panjim Inn. This unique hotel in the center of the historic Fontainhas district has 24 rooms—12 in the original inn, which was once the family home of the owner, Ajit Sukhija, the rest in an adjoining newly opened wing which offer a bit more space and river views. The new airy lobby/dining area is decorated in sleek black and white; it's the perfect place to enjoy the inn's Goan seafood specials, read the paper, or simply escape from the madness of Panaji's traffic. If you've stayed here in the past, not to worry: the original restaurant on the second-floor veranda hasn't changed a bit. The smaller, basic rooms in the old building are priced a bit lower than the larger deluxe and superior rooms in the annex.
