Money in Delhi

ATMs

ATMs are common in India, especially in large cities like Delhi. Machines on the Cirrus and NYCE networks can now be found in every major market in Delhi, including Connaught Place, Khan Market, Defence Colony, Greater Kailash, Basant Lok, and so forth. Your hotel can point you to the closest one. AmEx machines are for cardholders only.

Locations

American Express (A-Block, Connaught Place). ANZ Grindlays Bank (E-Block, Connaught Place). Bank of America (16 DCM Bldg., Barakhamba Rd., Connaught Place). Citibank (Jeevan Bharati Bldg., Outer Circle, Connaught Place.) HSBC (Khan Market).

Currency Exchange

Most hotels have foreign-exchange facilities for their guests and will cash traveler's checks with twice the speed and half the hassle of banks, albeit at inferior rates. The Central Bank of India in the Ashok Hotel is open 24 hours (except national holidays), but hours for the other banks vary; the Bank of America cashes traveler's checks only weekdays 10 to 2 and Saturday 10 to noon. Note that American Express and Thomas Cook cash only their own traveler's checks.

If you want to change money at the international airport, be sure to do it at the Bank of India counter—on the left as you exit Immigration, before you go through Customs. Thomas Cook runs a 24-hour exchange booth at the back side of New Delhi Railway Station, near Platform 12.
