Driving is not recommended for newcomers to India, as traffic takes highly unfamiliar forms here. If you're not on a tight budget, let an experienced driver take you around Delhi and outside town. Cars and drivers are available for half a day (four hours, 40 km ) at about Rs. 350 or a full day (eight hours, 80 km ) at about Rs. 700. Ask about different prices for different cars. The cheapest car is usually an Ambassador without air-conditioning; newer, bigger, or more comfortable cars cost more.
For out-of-town journeys, you'll pay upward of Rs. 3,000 per day for an air-conditioned car with an English-speaking driver, based on mileage and hours. If you're staying in a deluxe hotel, note that arranging a car through the travel desk costs significantly more than arranging one yourself through a travel agent, which is easy to do.
