Darjeeling and Sikkim Sights
Splendor apart, a trip into the eastern Himalayas requires planning and a bit of research. Navigating hilly roads are always tough and slow going. Journeys must start early and end early and routes worked out in advance. If you plan to trek farther afield from Pelling or Gangtok, you will need to put yourself in touch with experienced tour coordinators. Timing is also very important: Sikkim's pretty rhododendron jungles will lack flowers if you choose the wrong time for a forest hike. Don't nurture hopes of seeing Kanchenjunga (let alone Everest) if you decide to venture to this neighborhood in the rainy season. Avoid being slack with your paperwork because extra permits are required to visit certain areas of Darjeeling and Sikkim. Weather can change drastically around here and hotel rooms have no central heating, so pack accordingly.
