If you want a taste of life in the Raj, stay in this Calcutta landmark, built in 1801. A small hotel, the Fairlawn has memorabilia-cluttered walls, a winding staircase, and a great overall vibe. Waiters wear gloves, a gong sounds during mealtimes, and rooms have chintz bedspreads and old-fashioned bathtubs.
