$$$, Santa Cruz
Fodor's Review:
Extraordinarily posh, this massive property rises incongruously from a bleak urban landscape. Walk into the expansive building with its ultra-contemporary, block facade and you'll feel like you're in a modern art museum (with its excellent collection of Indian modern art) or a convention center with giant pieces of sculpture, sweeping granite floors, and many harsh right angles. Once you get over the disconnect and overcome the lack of warmth in the hotel's architecture, you'll begin to take in the polite service, varied and tasty cuisine, and the rooms, elegant but sparse and done in cream-clored soft furnishings and Ikea-style furniture. The bathrooms open out and become part of the room, giving a spacious feel. Each room has its own thermostat.
