One of India's best resorts emulates the opulent lifestyle of the Mughal emperors—complete with your own butler—and has a breathtaking view of the Taj Mahal. It's a Moorish fantasy of sandstone arches, glistening pools, and detail copied from the Taj Mahal, and each spacious room is understatedly elegant, with teak floors and rich fabrics. Standards of service are high, and centralized tipping is a boon. If you don't stay here, come to dine, or for a drink on the terrace.

This gorgeous getaway is excellent for a short trip to Agra. All of the rooms have a view of Taj Mahal, which is within walking distance of Oberoi Amarvilas. Our only disappointment is that we did not have a balcony and because we were on the top floor the windows did not open. The grounds are beautiful and the restaurants are well-worth the cost. As Agra was our first city to visit in India, we unknowingly ordered a spicy dish. We politely set
it aside and the waiter noticed, sending the Chef out who asked if he could prepare something different that would better suit our palette. A welcome respite from the streets of Agra.
