Yuantong Temple

  • Address: 30 Yuantong Jie, Kunming

Fodor's Review:

Yuantong Temple (Yuantong Si), the largest temple in the city, dates back some 1,200 years to the Tang Dynasty. The compound consists of a series of gates leading to the inner temple, which is surrounded by a pond brimming with fish and turtles. The chanting of worshippers in the serene environment makes it hard to believe you're in a big city. In the back of the compound is a temple housing a statue of Sakyamuni, a gift from the king of Thailand.
