Pudong Shangri-La Review

The Shangri-La occupies one of the most prized spots in Shanghai: overlooking the Huangpu River, opposite the Bund, near the Pearl Tower in Lujiazui. The hotel's breathtaking water's-edge views, white-glove service, and spacious rooms attract a mix of business and leisure travelers. The Shangri-La's two towers comprise the largest luxury hotel in Shanghai, with almost 1,000 guest rooms and 10 dining choices. Although rooms in Tower 2, behind the original hotel, come with 32-inch plasma TVs, DVD players, and fax machines, many return guests still prefer the rooms in Tower 1 for their gloriously unobstructed views of the Bund.

    Shanghai Business Travel Heaven

Recently (early February 2013, pre-Chinese New Holiday) had the privilege of a four-night stay - and initial Shanghai business trip - at this fine property. All expectations met and exceeded. (Have also been staying for work for some years at one of her sisters, the Island Shangri-La in Hong Kong; another special SL property. And before her, the SL in Bangkok for meetings.)

My corporate rate package included a river wing premier room with Horizon Club privileges, airport transfer, and late check-out, via my Jade level status with the SL's Golden Circle programme. Seamless check-in at the Horizon Club after the evening PVG arrival via Singapore Airlines flight 836 J. (A business colleague had suggested the later SQ836 to minimize traffic; wise counsel.)

The Pudong Shangri-La is a relatively large property, but thanks to the gratefully high ratio of staff to guest, all requests handled with the same efficiency I've experienced with her colleagues in HK and BKK. Indeed, during my stay, the staff was infused with that impending and joyous Chinese New Year spirit.

Most efficient check-out and transfer for the SQ833 J flight back home to Singapore.

Not completely certain when my next Shanghai business trip will transpire (perhaps, May, 2013); when it does, the Pudong SL will most certainly be on my desired short list.

Many thanks, special SL staff. Savour your Shanghai times.
