Just off the frenzied shopping street of Huaihai Road, the Donghu Hotel remains one of Shanghai's best preserved hotels from the city's 1920s heyday. The hotel's seven buildings have a surprising array of restaurants -- Korean barbecue and Japanese, in addition to the standard Chinese and Western fare -- an indoor pool, and a wide variety of room options. "Superior" rooms in Building 7 don't quite live up to their title and are simply furnished with twin beds and rather mismatched yellow wallpaper and red carpet. We suggest the Donghu deluxe rooms across the street at Building 1 -- with their traditional Chinese furniture and dark-wood paneling, these spacious rooms make you feel as if you've stepped back in time.

Warning. Do not stay here.
Mold and hair in the room. Woken by cleaning 4 times in 2 hours. Insects in the room.
First, I was given a room with mold in the bathroom, hair in the bed and a staple on the floor. The next morning, I was given a much better room which was clean and well laid out.
On my final night in the hotel, I was kept away by mosquitoes until 6.30am in the morning. I then woken by the cleaning service at 8.30am. There was a please do not disturb sign on my door. The cleaners continued to yell to each other in front of my door until I rang the front desk to ask them to stop. I was woken again by cleaners yelling in front of my door. I was woken again by loud vacuuming in front of my door. Both times, I had to ring to front desk to ask them to stop.
I complaint and was offered minor discount. When I was presented with the bill, the discount was half the amount agreed.
