A frequent choice for budget tour groups, the Nanjing Hotel is only half a block yet a world away from the modern bustle of the Nanjing Dong Lu pedestrian walkway. Step out the front door and you'll see China as the locals do: fruit vendors balancing their loads, trash men ringing their hand bells. The hotel's proximity to the metro line and the Bund compensate for the street noise and lack of views. Built in 1931, the eight-story building is dated, yet rooms are fair-sized with Internet access and a few satellite channels. Though 5th-floor rooms were refurbished in 2006, opt for a room on the 6th floor, which is quieter.
