Fodor's Review:
This 1926 property has done an admirable job of preserving its charm. The marble lobby and the downstairs bar, decorated with art-deco leather chairs and archived photos of 1920s Shanghai, sweep you back to the city's glory days. In the original Italian-style front building, 6th- and 7th-floor rooms have wood floors, ornate molded ceilings, and great views of People's Park. (Bathrooms, though, are rather institutional.) The smaller rooms in the rear building lack the fine detail and views but are still comfortable and are a bit quieter. Amenities fall short, and soundproofing could be better, but the hotel's proud history, prime location, and prices make it an appealing choice.
