With its ornate lobby resembling a European opera house, the Ramada Plaza Shanghai brings a touch of grandeur to the Nanjing Road pedestrian walkway. Statues of Greek gods reign from atop intricate inlaid tables. Soaring marble columns direct the eye skyward toward a stained-glass skylight. Although the fair-size rooms lack any great views, they do face in toward a dramatic atrium, topped by yet another and the executive lounge. In 2005, an indoor swimming pool, one of the largest in Shanghai, was added, housed inside an addition reminiscent of an ancient Chinese palace. Given the lush setting and ace location, the Ramada Plaza is a good value for the money, and you can usually get a room for less than the rack rate.
