Pacific Hotel

People's Sq., 108 Nanjing Xi Lu, Shanghai, Shanghai Shi, 200003, China

This 1926 property has done an admirable job of preserving its charm: the marble lobby and the downstairs bar, with leather chairs and photos from 1920s Shanghai, sweep you back to the city's glory days. In the original Italian-style front building, 6th- and 7th-floor rooms have wood floors, ornate molded ceilings, and great views of People's Park. The smaller rooms in the rear building lack the fine detail and views, but are still comfortable and a bit quieter. The amenities fall short, as do the service, and soundproofing could be better. Luxe it's not, but for the price the hotel is in a superb location, with a rich history to boot.
