Health and Safety

Overall China is quite safe, with violent crime against foreigners practically unheard of. Still, particularly in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, petty crime can be a problem. Take the usual precautions against appearing conspicuously wealthy, and carry with you only the amount of cash you need. Crowded places, such as bus and train stations, often harbor pickpockets, so keep your eyes on your bags and your wallet in your front pocket. Avoid carrying valuables in open-top bags. If you see a local wearing a backpack on the front of his or her body, it's probably a good idea to do the same.
