Pearl River Delta Feature

Guangzhou by Underground

Guangzhou's ever expanding subway system is cheap, clean, and (unlike Beijing's) reasonably efficient. It's divided into six lines that span both sides of the Pearl River, but most casual visitors will spend most of their time on Lines 1 and 2 (the red and yellow lines on the maps). The most interesting temples and shrines are within walking distance of stations along Line 1, with signs in English pointing the way.

The terminus of Line 1 is Gongyuanqian Station, where you'll find the Guangzhou East Train Station. This area is also the heart of the Tianhe, Guangzhou's financial and business district and is close to Beijing Pedestrian Road, the hip, trendy shopping district. Gongyuanqian Station is also the transfer point for Lines 1 and 2.

English-language subway maps are available. Make sure to ask at your hotel. Consider buying the Transportation Smart Card, which costs Y10 and allows you to add money as you need it.
