Lantau Peak Review

Please do not mislead Fodors readers into thinking that there is an “easy” way to reach Lantau Peak from the Buddha!! From that side, the ascent is actually more difficult, as it is basically straight up for over an hour on very steep stairs (known as “Climbing Sky Ladder” for a reason). In wet or foggy weather, this should not be attempted by people who are not used to climbing. It can also be quite windy which does not help. Even in good weather, this is a strenuous walk up from the Buddha side, or a somewhat treacherous walk down if you approach from the other side.

While the views are indeed tremendous on a good day, this is not a “walk”, it is a hike and those doing it should have proper shoes, plenty of water (esp in summer), and a working mobile phone just in case.

Additionally, please do not give people the impression that they have to “walk” from Mui Wo to get to Lantau Peak, a simply silly suggestion. (I wonder if your author has ever actually done this walk.) Lantau Peak is Stage 3 of the Lantau Trail, and can be reached either from the Buddha as mentioned above, or from Tung Chung Road. From Mui Wo, take any bus bound for Tung Chung Centre. After passing the coast, the bus will turn right and start up steep Tung Chung Road. Alight at the very top (or tell the driver where you want to get off as there is construction at this point which will continue through 2009). On this same side of the road (left, i.e. uphill side) look for a set of stone stairs, brown wooden railings, a map board and signs for Stage 3 of the Lantau Trail/Lantau Peak. From here, it is about 2 hours to Lantau Peak.
