Kowloon Shangri-La Review

You might feel like a '70s tycoon amid murals, fountains, and crystal chandeliers in the lobby, and the feeling extends to the spacious rooms decorated in warm colors with armchairs, rich wooden furniture, bay windows, and nice marbled bathrooms. Facilities include an indoor pool, sauna, and massage and facial services, and a footbridge from the lobby leads to a scenic walk down the east side of the promenade to the hot spots of Tsim Sha Tsui—an excellent way to start an evening with cocktails and snacks.

    Fancy but not pretentious

I spent 2 1/2 weeks traveling through China. Among stays at several very good hotels, this was my favorite. It's fancy -- crystal chandeliers, huge fresh flower arrangements in the huge lobby, etc., but the staff had no haughty attitude and was uniformly pleasant and helpful. We felt entirely comfortable hanging out in the hotel's public spaces even though we were clearly tourists and dressed pretty casually. The harbor-view room is large. It was great to re-charge by putting on the complimentary robe and slippers and plopping down in one of the big, comfy armchairs in the seating area overlooking the water and the promenade -- it's a never-ending parade of activity at any time of the day or night. The best bathroom too -- big, white marble, separate shower and tub, lots of nice free soaps, toothbrushes, etc. The hotel is a moderate walk to the Star ferry and the subway, has an overpass directly to the promenade, and is in an upscale neighborhood with restaurants, shops, a small grocery store, ATM's etc. Have the buffet at Cafe Kool at least once; the variety is astounding and the food is good.
