It might be old and fairly dingy, but Great Shanghai is perfect if you prefer the bold flavors of Shanghainese food to the more delicate tastes of local Cantonese fare. Even if you don't feel ready for the sea blubber or braised turtle with sugar candy, you should at least consider one of the boneless eel dishes, the Shanghai-style yellow fish soup, the beggar's chicken (order in advance before noon for dinner), or the excellent spiced soy duck. For less adventurous palates there are more fundamental Shanghainese goodies such as sautéed river shrimp, Chinese cabbage with Yunnan ham, tasty fried noodles, or juicy dumplings.
