Midlevels Escalator

Transportation Sites, Western

Fodor's Review:

A practical human mover, this is actually a 1-km-long ( 1/2-mi-long) combination of escalators and walkways that provide free, glass-covered transport up or down the steep incline between Central and Midlevels. The effortless trip provides a view of small Chinese shops, a wet market, the Jamia Mosque at Shelley Street, and gleaming residential high-rises. In fact, you're often so close to the apartments that it's impossible to avoid peering in, perhaps on a family having dinner or watching TV. Starting at Staunton Street, the escalator cuts through the fashionable SoHo area, filled with cafés, bars, and boutiques.

Plan to ride the escalators up between 10:20 AM and 11:30 PM. From 6 to 10 AM they move downhill only, so commuters from Midlevels can get to work. After 11:30 PM the escalators shut down, and that equates to a long walk on steep steps. You can get off at any point and explore side streets where vendors sell porcelain, clothes, and antiques (not necessarily authentic). Most buildings have tiny makeshift altars to ancestors, usually made of colorful red paper with gold Chinese characters, with offerings of fruit and incense.
