It may feel a bit weird to have a Spanish fiesta at the former British Army Officers' quarters, but nevertheless, this restaurant is definitely worth a visit. Order a few tapas and a sangria or a bottle of Rioja, and remember to ask for a table with a sea view. Garlic prawns and stuffed mushrooms are some of the best choices on the tapas menu.

El Cid is now called "Mijas", but it continues to host one of the most unique and romantic evenings in Hong Kong. If the temperature is above 25C and there is a good moon, the seaside veranda may be one of the most beautiful settings in the area. Except for the Chinese faces, we could have been in Malaga, or the Costa de la Luz in Spain. Try the Suckling Pig, Boquerones & Sardines, or the Jamon Serrano imported from Spain. Start at the Central Subway Station and ask a taxi driver to take you to Stanley Plaza on the South side of HK Island. $125 USD for two, incl a good wine.

I may never get to Hong Kong again, so the chance to sit in the shade of the Murray House terraces, watching the sea, far from the bistro haunts to be found on Stanley's waterfront, was not to be missed. A relaxing lunch, starting with wonderful gazpacho, then grilled salmon with a glass of white wine. A coffee to finish. And of course, plenty of water in the 30 degrees heat. And always the sea, pinching myself as I looked on.
If I ate in HK many times maybe I would have a better perspective on value. But the value equation for me was very simple. For a Brit, HK is a good bargain at the moment, and even if I'd had to pay a little more to eat here I would have. 48 hours later, back in wet Bristol, that memory will be with me for a long time.
