Why We Like It

The location will certainly be a detraction for some but this cool, creative hotel in East Kowloon does more than enough to keep guests entertained and engaged once inside. We love the leisure amenities, the lounge dining space and the pizza parlour along with the general industrial chic of the building.

Fodor's Expert Review

All the way over in east Kowloon, Pentahotel Kowloon can feel like a schlep from the hustle of Hong Kong Island. However, what you get in return for staying in a quieter area of the city is a hip, upscale hotel packed with amenities at a reasonable price. Constructing its own cool warehouse scene, the Pentahotel Kowloon can offer games rooms, lounge dining, plenty of meeting rooms for corporate guests and best of all, a pizza joint.

You Should Know The 38-minute MTR journey into Central might be too much for some.

Room

Hip black and white photo collages of old Hong Kong add a touch of personality to neutral rooms that choose comfort over wacky interior finishes. Space in the standard Pentarooms is reasonable but if you need a separate living space then upgrade to the huge Pentagrand.

Tip Views from the windows aren’t the most picturesque with the Hong Kong Island skyline just a distant blur beyond a mix of low and high-rise blocks.

Bathroom

Impressive bathrooms stick to a slick black color palette and come with walk-in rainforest showers.

Lobby

The tone of the Pentahotel is light-hearted, irreverent and industrial, which feels like something of a depart from the tactic employed by most upscale properties. The lobby brings the style with stenciled graffiti walls, a Pizza bar, two games room lounges with pool table, foosball and sofas and plenty of work stations set up with computers.

Pool

The hotel’s impressive outdoor pool is surrounded by a spacious sun deck and loungers for guests.

You Should Know The seasonal pool closes from November through May.

Gym

A standard gym provides a number of treadmills and other cardio machines in a nondescript space.

Dining

The Pentalounge dining room brings a cool, luxurious industrial look that wouldn’t seem out of place in a Soho House. Breakfast and dinner buffet is served in the impressive space. Alternatively, guests can opt for a slice from the basement Pizza Bar.

Drinking

Enjoy drinks in the Lounge or embrace pool hall vibes with drinks in one of the hotel’s games rooms.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

There’s no getting around the fact that the hotel is located a way out of town but despite what islanders may have you believe, business and pleasure happen way out in Kowloon too. Still, the journey onto Hong Kong Island is long at around 35 minutes via the Diamond Hill MTR.

Restaurants

After a visit to the Chi Lin Nunnery, visit the excellent Chi Lin Vegetarian Restaurant (18-minute walk). Or, take a short walk to Kwai Kee Chiu (4-minute walk) for traditional Hong Kong and Chinese food in the neighborhood restaurant.

Bars

There isn’t a great deal in the immediate vicinity so guests would be better off making a night of it and taking a cab towards Mong Kok where Tap: The Ale Project (14-minute drive) is a great place to sample the city’s craft beer scene.
