If you like cheap, funky, and hip little hotels, this is the spot for you. Guangzhou's first attempt at a boutique hotel has compact, Ikea-inspired rooms with bold color palettes and clean lines. Celine Dion muzak wafting through the hallways can be an annoyance, but the warm, cozy beds guarantee a restful sleep. The small 1st-floor restaurant serves cheap northeast Chinese food that is as authentic and tasty.

Though it was a bit out of the way and we (my companions and I) had to lug our heavy backpacks for quite a distance before we could locate the hotel, Elan turned out to be a hotel that met our expectations. It was definitely good value for money, after we had got over the initial shock at the toilet. Don't be mistaken... the toilet was impeccably clean and well-equipped. But the see-through quality of the walls (that were supposed to provide some privacy for its users) took some getting used to at the beginning, at least by shyer stayers like us. In any case, the overall cleanliness of the hotel and the genuine warmth exuded by its staff made our 2-nite stay a memorably happy and comfortable one.
