Pearl River Delta Restaurant Reviews
Most Cantonese dishes are stirfried or steamed, although roasted meats such as barbecued chicken and pork are also popular. Dim sum—literally meaning "touch your heart"—includes a huge selection of dumplings and pastries. Filled with meat and vegetables, they are a perfect way to start or end the day. When you go out to eat, go with as many people as you can find so that you can try as many different dishes as possible.
One Cantonese saying goes "anything with its back towards the sky is edible," and the idea is so inclusive that any animal or insects, including snakes, civet cats, and locusts, makes the list. The cuisine also makes use of every part of an animals body, including feet, tongues, and entrails. Be adventurious but make sure you know what you're eating! And stick to fully cooked dishes to avoid bacterial or parasitic infections, particularly during warm weather.
A few things to remember when eating chopsticks: do not stick your them vertically into your bowl of rice, this is thought to be unlucky because it resembles burning joss sticks connected with the death. Don't be surprised to hear people slurping and burping—these are totally acceptable behaviors not only in China, but in most of Asia as well. When eating rice, bring the edge of the bowl to your mouth and use your chopsticks to push the rice in.
