The Pear River Delta is among China's most polluted regions, and that is saying a lot. From the southern suburbs of Guangzhou city to the northern edge of Shenzhen, industry stretches in all directions. So why visit? The answers are myriad. History enthusiasts head to Guangzhou, Guangdong province's ancient capital and the historic center of both Cantonese culture and the revolution that overthrew the last dynasty. Gourmands flock to both Guangzhou and Shenzhen to indulge in some of the best examples of Chinese cuisine -- and increasingly, the world -- at all price ranges. Culture vultures don't mind putting up with the pollution and chaos for a chance to visit the many temples, shrines, and museums scattered throughout the region. And shop-a-holics? A visit to the Pearl River Delta will quickly dismiss any lingering notions that China is still a nation bound by the tenets of Marx and Mao.
