Considered by many to be the best hotel in Beijing, the St. Regis is a favorite of foreign businesspeople and visiting dignitaries. This is where President Bush stayed during his visit to China, and where Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino stayed during the filming of Kill Bill. You won't be disappointed: the luxurious interiors combine classical Chinese elegance and fine, modern furnishings. The Press Club Bar, with its grand piano, dark wood, and stocked bookcases, feels like a private club. And the on-site Japanese restaurant has good, moderately priced lunch specials. The Astor Grill is known for its steak and seafood dishes, and Danielli's serves authentic Italian food. We went back for seconds of waffles with fresh blueberries at the Coffee Garden's incredible breakfast buffet. The St. Regis health club is arguably the most unique in Beijing: the equipment is state-of-the-art; the Jacuzzi is supplied with natural hot spring water pumped up from deep beneath the hotel; and the glass-atrium swimming pool, with plenty of natural light, is a lovely place for a relaxing swim. An added plus is that it's just a 10-minute taxi ride to the Forbidden City. If you can afford it, this is the place to stay.
