The Bamboo Garden is a charming hotel that was once the residence of Sheng Xuanhuai, a high-ranking Qing official, and, later, of Mao's henchman Kang Sheng. A powerful and sinister character, responsible for "public security" during the Cultural Revolution, Kang nevertheless had fine taste in art and antiques. The Bamboo Garden cannot compete with the high-rise crowd when it comes to comfort and facilities, but its lovely bamboo-filled courtyards and gardens make it a genuine treasure for those looking for a true Chinese experience. It's within walking distance to the colorful Houhai, or Rear Lakes, area, and the Drum and Bell Towers; the neighborhood is perfect if you want to experience the lifestyles of ordinary Beijingers.
