$-$$, Chaoyang District
Fodor's Review:
Despite its 1950s-style name ("build the country"), Jianguo Hotel was the very first U.S.-China joint venture hotel in the city. Wonderfully central, it is close to the diplomatic compounds, southern embassy area, and the Silk Market. It's also a reasonable alternative for people taking part in conferences at the more expensive China World Hotel, just one block away. Nearly half the rooms have balconies overlooking busy Jianguomenwai Dajie. The Jianguo has maintained its friendly and cozy feel and continues to attract many diplomats, journalists, and businesspeople. The popular, renovated atrium lobby is bright and furnished with comfortable cushioned rattan sofas and arm chairs. Charlie's Bar, an old favorite, has a good lunch buffet, and Flo Justine's is one of the best French restaurants in the city. The gym and pool facilities, however, are very basic.
