When it opened in 1959, the Minzu (Nationalities) Hotel was labeled one of the 10 great buildings in Beijing. This paean to the unity of China's different people has welcomed many prominent foreign visitors over the years. It's been renovated into yet another shiny pleasure dome but maintains its original local appeal. The hotel lies on western Chang'an Jie, 10 minutes from Tiananmen Square and next to the Nationalities' Cultural Palace. With the rise in the number of luxury hotels around Beijing, the hotel no longer attracts prominent visitors and the only reason to stay here—other than price—is if you have business in the immediate area.
