If you'd like a real change of pace from the city art scene, hire a driver or join a tour to visit the Artists' Village in the eastern suburbs of Beijing. Over 500 artists live and work in studio spaces, peasant homes, and old buildings in and around the central village of Song Zhuang. Though a trip out to the Artist Village can take a chunk out of your day, the trip is worth it. The countryside is a stark contrast to the city, and the art is of excellent quality. The gallery itself displays local works in a modern, well-appointed building. Visits are by appointment only, so talk with your hotel concierge before booking a car.
