The Shangri-La hotel chain opened this palatial, upscale hotel to much fanfare in 1999. Its ultramodern interiors and convenient location close to Beijing's embassy and business district make it an excellent choice for business travelers and anyone who wants to be near shopping. The Forbidden City is a 10- to 15-minute drive away. What really distinguishes it from other glitzy hotels in Beijing is the amazing health club. With a full-service fitness center and spa, a jogging track, squash and tennis courts, and, of course, a pool, it's the health club of choice for expats living in Beijing. Centro, the lobby bar, is arguably the most popular hotel bar in the city. The free wireless Internet throughout the lobby, including in the bar and restaurants, is an added plus.
